Sorry, I am dim

I was trying to be tongue in check about Sharpies. They are just your basic permanent marker, but useful when I don't like my thread colour. Not really a sewing tool. I should have made that more obvious to be funny as I intended Mary Pat

Sharpies are found everywhere (at least in WA). Coles, your newsagent, officeworks (http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Back-to-School/Pens-and-Pencils/SA20083066) And they come in a huge range of fantastic colours lol

I thought this might be a local vocabulary issue, and asked my husband if he knew what a Sharpie was. He said, "Yes, a Niko". I asked my children, the girls both said, "Yes, a permanent marker". My son said "Yes, a pencil sharpener". Not only do I fail to understand tongue in cheek humour, I have the stationery knowledge of a 7 year old.

Then came this helpful, but dimness confirming comment from someone who lives about an hour and a half away from me.

Sharpies are everywhere in Australia. Try your local newsagents, supermarket stationery section, K-mart and Big W, or the local art supply store. Deb

I live in a medium sized town, there is no Officeworks, no K-mart, but there is a newish Big W, which I do not usually patronize.

There is also a Coles (primarily food supermarket), into which I deposit large chunks of my income several times a week (teenagers)

and a Woolworths (another food supermarket)

and here is the office supply shop selection.

I visit this shop every month or so. I do not know how I have maintained yesterday's level of ignorance for so long. (Um, that would be dimness)
You can see that the local colour selection of Sharpies and their other brand name relations is maybe not so varied as in other places, but I came up with 9 colours/shades across the shops I looked at. Fortunately, one shade was metallic silver, so I could use Mary Pat's brilliant idea. I take it very seriously! See how nicely it worked.

and I have also bought myself a nice 0.3mm artline permanent marker. I plan to use Lauren's tip, and try this purchase for tracing BWOF patterns.
Thanks for being kind to me. I learn something every day.

I have edited this post to fix the photographs, as Picasa seems to be feeling Australiacentric today, and only showing them to local viewers. Hopefully they are now also working elsewhere.

lol... we know all about sharpies at our house as my son likes to sketch so we have millions of them (cheaper than expensive markers). When you mentioned them, I assumed they might be some new product available only from two shops in America!

Never mind, I only knew what they were because I have two teens that use them to black out the white bits on their school shoes (so they don't get into trouble for wearing skate shoes to school) and they also use them for arty type endeavours.

Karen, I can't see any of the pictures in this post?

Don't feel bad - when I lived in Hawaii they called them marsh pens there and for months I had no idea what they were talking about

Don't be too hard on yourself, we've all done something similar. And hey, thanks for linking to my blog! You're my first link ever :)

Hi Karen,

I hope you see this new post as I have a question for you regarding the Sharpies.

Did you see a brown one during your discoveries? I'm having no luck in Sydney.
