Burda Style 08-2011-130 shorts, and a giveaway

DSC00800

I have made these shorts twice before, and they were a great success with daughter the second, so were a natural choice for the start of my older daughter's Uni wardrobe, which I think may be my 2013 SWAP entry, should I get my act together.

Technical drawing from BurdaStyle magazine
This version is from a stretch cotton denim, stash age approximately 2008, from Kerryn's fabric world. As I have a bad history with stretch nether garments, I have used a woven cotton for the waistband facing and button plackets, and have reinforced the crotch and waist seams with woven selvage to minimize bagging.

This, and the bias bound seams, also helps to use up little bits of fabric for stashbusting purposes.
I added a waistband pocket, just the right size for a Go card (Brisbane public transport card) using this method.
My daughter is very pleased with them.

A win in several areas at once is good!

In the spirit of stashbusting, I have been sorting through my patterns.

Today I would like to give away these excess children's patterns and magazines. They are not current, but I find TopKids magazines very useful for the basic children's clothes that do not change much, such as shorts, t-shirts and little girls' frocks. These magazines are all duplicate copies, as I am keeping my set ;). The Chery Williams patterns for smocked dresses include good instructions for heirloom sewing techniques. I would rather give them to a reader than the Op Shop. If you would like these patterns and magazines (as a set) please say so in a comment on this post by Jan 31. If more than one person would like them I will draw names.

Cute shorts. Congratulations to your daughter getting into uni - big changes ahead I presume with moving or commuting.
I have all of those Topkids patterns as well.

Cute shorts. Using non stretch for the facings was a good idea. Great giveaway but I already have a healthy Topkids collection but alas no one to really use them on any more so I won't need to be involved Thanks.

Congrats on your daughter getting in the university! Love the inner waistband details and bias bound seams - both add nice contrast!

Count me in the giveaway please! I'd love to use the Topkids magazine for my 6 yr old daughter. I have heard great things about this magazine.

Shorts are just perfect for Uni - particularly in Brisbane! These look fantastic on her. And the insides are just as good as the outside - great sewing!
I already have the TopKid magazines, they are excellent and offer many creative ideas...J

I giggled at the term "stretch nether garments." The shorts look fab. I would love to be counted in the giveaway. There will be kids sewing in my future for sure!

the shorts look great, and I must give your hidden pocket a go. I would like to say count me in for the give-away but if the UK is too far and you would rather send closer to home I would understand.

I love these shorts. I'd wear them inside out! I'm just watching footage of your area on the news. Hope you're safe at home with a fully stocked pantry.

Love those shorts. I've been eyeing that Burda pattern. If you're willing to ship internationally (USA) I'd love to enter the drawing -- if not, it's perfectly fine!

I've just found your blog and have begun to check in often!

The shorts are great - love the colour and the button detail. I am so sorry to have given away my Topkids when we moved (I wasn't sewing so much then). I don't have littlies at the moment to sew for, so will pass on the giveaway offer as I am sure they can go to a household where they will get used more.

Love the shorts. Top Kids makes me weep with nostalgia. I gave away mine to a sewer with little kids, but kept one...for grandkid sewing (just don't tell my 21 and 17 year old daughters!)

I used to love Topkids when my son was younger. But now I have a tiny niece and wish I'd kept them. Please put my name in the hat for the give away. Glad to hear you and your family are safe and sound. Qld overdoes dramatic weather!

I would love to be considered for the giveaway please. I wasn't going to enter, but I found myself dreaming about topkids magazine last night?! So I guess that's a sign ;)

Love your daughter's shorts and look forward to seeing the rest of her uni wardrobe. I still vividly remember the excitement of putting together my own uni wardrobe after so many years of school uniforms!

So cute! Now that my baby is in one size for awhile, I'd love to be able to sew for him! Do any of your magazines have small boy clothes? And if you're willing (I'm in the US), I'd love to enter your giveaway!
